Managing Litters
A litter records a set of offspring born from a mating.
Create a litter
- Go to your program's Reproduction tab and open the Matings & Litters section.
- Open the row menu for the mating and click Record Litter. The option only appears for matings that have no litter yet and are not marked planned or unsuccessful.
- Enter the Litter Date (required).
- Optionally add a Name (e.g. "Spring 2025 Litter") and Notes.
- Click Create Litter.
The litter is created with no offspring. Add them afterwards (see below).
Adding offspring
Open the litter, go to the Details tab and select the Offspring section. Click Add Offspring and enter the offspring's Name (required), optional Call Name, Gender, Birthdate and Breed. Sire and dam are set automatically from the mating. Repeat for each animal in the litter.
New offspring start with what the litter already knows:
- Birthdate: the litter date.
- Species: the program's species (or the parents' if the program has none).
- Breed: the parents' breed when they match, otherwise the program's breed.
Anything you enter yourself is kept, and you can change any of these later on the animal's page.
Offspring you add from the litter page start with status Litter. Clicking a row opens the animal's page.
Working through a litter one animal at a time
An offspring's page shows which litter it belongs to under its name, for example Spring 2026 litter · 2 of 5. Click the litter name to return to the litter's Offspring list, or use Prev and Next to move to the previous or next animal in the same order as the list. You stay on the same tab, so you can log a weight on the Health tab for each animal in turn. On a keyboard, [ and ] do the same as Prev and Next.
The litter page remembers which section you were on. If you open an offspring from the Offspring list, your browser's back button returns you to that list.
When you open an offspring from the Offspring list, the path at the top of its page reads Programs › your program › Litters › the litter › the animal, and it stays that way while you switch tabs or move with Prev and Next. Click the litter in that path to return to the Offspring list. Opening an animal from a contact's placed animals or a program's Animals tab works the same way, with the contact or the program in the path. Open the animal any other way, for example from the sidebar or search, and the path shows Animals instead.
Acting on an offspring from the litter
Each offspring row has an actions menu (the ⋮ button at the end of the row). On a phone it is the only action on the row. It offers:
- Open: the animal's page.
- Mark as placed: opens the same dialog as on the animal's page. The roster updates as soon as you save, and you stay on the litter. See Placing offspring in new homes.
- Record weight and Add journal note: open that form on the animal's page.
- Keep: tick it when an offspring moves to your active breeding stock, which sets its status to Active. Untick it to set it back to Litter. The row shows Kept while it is ticked.
- Mark deceased: asks you to confirm and enter the date of death.
- Remove from litter: only for animals linked to the litter that weren't born in it.
Once an animal is placed, its menu no longer offers Mark as placed or Keep, and the row shows Placed with the buyer.
Litter tabs
Each litter has its own detail page with these tabs:
- Details: the litter's Info, its Offspring list (add offspring, and act on each one from its row menu) and a Journal
- Health: the litter's Weights, Growth and Vaccinations sections (see Vaccinations)
- Events: litter-specific events (vet checks, weigh days, etc.)
- Files: documents and photos for the litter
- Costs: what the litter cost and earned (see Litter costs and break-even)
Litter costs and break-even
The Costs tab shows:
- Total costs: expenses recorded against the litter, its mating (such as the stud fee) or any of its offspring (such as a kitten's vet check), broken down by category below. An expense linked to both the litter and an offspring counts once.
- Cost per kitten (or puppy): total costs divided by the animals on the litter's Offspring list. It shows a dash until the litter has offspring.
- Income: paid invoices for any of the litter's offspring, plus income records attributed to the litter or one of its offspring. A payment counted on an invoice is never counted again through a linked income record, so these figures match the Business Overview.
- Net: income minus total costs. While it's negative the tab shows how much more the litter needs to break even.
To have a sale show up here, put the kitten or puppy on its invoice, or attribute the income record to the litter or the animal.
Recording weights
Weights are recorded per animal, not for the litter as a whole. Open the litter, go to Health and select Weights, then click Record Weight. Choose the offspring from the Animal list, enter the weight and save. You need at least one offspring in the litter before you can record a weight.
The Growth section plots the recorded weights as growth charts for each offspring. It stays empty until weights have been recorded.
Placing offspring in new homes
When a puppy or kitten goes home, use Mark as placed in its row menu on the litter, or the Mark as placed button at the top of its page. (Advanced, then Mark as Placed, does the same.) Pick the buyer from your contacts or add them, and confirm the go-home date (it defaults to today).
Placing is one step that changes these things together:
- Ownership becomes Placed, with the buyer recorded as the owner contact and the go-home date.
- Status becomes Active if it was Litter. A Retired or Deceased status is kept.
- Breeding role becomes Companion, because an animal you don't own doesn't breed for you. The role badge is hidden on placed animals.
- It is taken out of every breeding program.
- Its litter, pedigree, contacts and records are kept.
After placing:
- The animal's page shows Placed with the buyer and the date, linked to their contact.
- The litter's Offspring list shows Placed with the buyer.
- The Advanced tab offers Create contract (and Create invoice if invoicing is on), with the buyer and animal filled in. Contracts and invoices for the animal are listed on its Info tab. Creating a contract or invoice never marks an animal as placed. Only Mark as placed does.
If a placed animal comes back to you, open it, go to Advanced and click Mark as Owned. It becomes owned again, its status goes back to Active (unless it is retired or deceased), and it rejoins the breeding program of its litter. Its breeding role stays Companion, so set it on the Info tab. The buyer no longer has it under Placed animals; their timeline keeps when they took it home and shows when it was returned.
The animal stays in your records for pedigree purposes.
Deleting a litter
A litter with animals linked to it can't be deleted. If the litter is real, keep it and edit it. If it was entered by mistake:
- Animals recorded as born in the litter can't be removed from it. Delete each of those animals from its own page.
- Other linked animals can be removed from the litter. That keeps the animal.
Then delete the litter. Deleting a litter never deletes its animals for you.
