Recording Matings

A mating links a sire and dam within a breeding program on a specific date.

Add a mating

  1. Open your breeding program.
  2. Go to the Reproduction tab.
  3. Click New Mating.
  4. Select the Sire and Dam from the animals enrolled in the program.
  5. Enter the Mating date.
  6. Set the Status:
    • Planned — scheduled but not yet confirmed
    • Confirmed — mating took place
    • Unsuccessful — mating did not result in a pregnancy
  7. Add any notes (optional).
  8. Click Save.

Once a litter is recorded against a mating, the status updates to reflect the outcome.

Who can be a sire or dam

BreederPro checks every new mating, whether you add it here or through Claude:

  • The sire must be recorded as male and the dam as female. If an animal's gender is wrong or unknown, fix it on the animal first.
  • An animal whose breeding role is Companion can't be bred. Change its role to Breeder or Evaluating if it is breeding.
  • Both animals must be enrolled in the program.

When Claude backfills a past mating, it marks the mating as historical. That skips the companion and enrollment checks, so a stud that has since been neutered or has left the program can still be recorded as the sire of his past litters. The sex check always applies.

When you edit a mating, only a sire or dam you change is checked again.

After a successful mating

When a mating results in offspring, record a litter directly from the mating:

  1. Open the mating from the Reproduction tab.
  2. Click Record Litter.
  3. Enter the birth date and add the offspring.

See Managing Litters for full details.

Editing matings

Click the mating row in the Reproduction tab to open its details. You can update the date, status, notes, or linked animals.

Deleting matings

Open the mating details and click Delete Mating. This does not delete the animals or any litters linked to the mating.
