CSV Import

If you already keep your animals in a spreadsheet, CSV Import brings them into BreederPro in a few steps. You upload the file, match its columns to BreederPro's fields, check the animals, and import them into a breeding program.

CSV Import is available on Basic, Pro and Max. See Plans and billing. For a single animal, use Adding Animals instead.

Before you start

  • Save your spreadsheet as a CSV (.csv) or TSV (.tsv) file.
  • Put column names in the first row. The file needs at least one row of animals below the headings.
  • Each row needs a name. Rows without a name are skipped.

Step 1: Upload

  1. Go to Animals and click Import CSV, or open /import/csv.
  2. Choose the program the animals will be added to. It starts on your only program, or the one you last added an animal to.
  3. Drag your file onto the page, or click to choose it, then click Parse CSV.

If your file uses the column headings of a known breeder software export, such as CatBreederPro, the columns are matched for you on the next step.

Step 2: Map columns

Each column in your file appears with a dropdown. Choose the BreederPro field it holds, or (skip) to ignore the column.

BreederPro field Notes
Name (registered) Required
Call Name
Gender
Birthdate
Date of death
Status Active, Retired, Deceased or Litter
Ownership Owned, External or Placed
Sire Name, Dam Name Matched to animals already in your account
Breed
Registration, Color, Microchip, Titles Saved as custom fields on the animal
Breeding role Breeder, Evaluating or Companion. Other spellings such as pet or neutered are understood
Tags Separate several tags with commas

Under Defaults for unmapped fields, choose the gender, status and ownership to use for any animal whose row doesn't have that column. Click Preview Import to continue.

Step 3: Review

The review lists every animal with a preview of its details.

  • Duplicates: an animal whose name matches one already in your account is marked as skipped. Click it to toggle it back on if you want to import it anyway.
  • Missing name: rows without a name are skipped.
  • Warnings: a warning appears when a value can't be used as written, for example an unknown breeding role. The default is used instead.

Click Review Animals when you're happy with the list.

Step 4: Import

Confirm the import to save the animals. The summary shows how many were imported and how many were skipped. Click View Animals to see them, or Import Another CSV to start again.

If the import would take you over your owned animal limit, nothing is imported. The message tells you which plan lifts the limit.
