Pedigree & Lineage
BreederPro lets you build a pedigree tree by linking animals to their sire (father) and dam (mother). The Pedigree tab offers two views: an interactive graph for exploring lineage, and a printable certificate for documentation.
Linking sire and dam
When adding or editing an animal, use the Sire and Dam fields to select from animals already in your account. These can be owned animals or external (pedigree-only) records.
External animals
If an ancestor isn't in your care but you want to record their lineage, add them as an External animal. External animals:
- Don't appear in your main Animals list
- Can be linked as sire/dam to your owned animals
- Show up in the pedigree visualization
Interactive view
The default view shows an interactive graph of the animal and its ancestors. Click any node to navigate to that animal's profile. Use the generation selector (3–5 generations) to control how many generations are displayed.
Certificate view
Switch to Certificate view to see a traditional pedigree layout suitable for printing or saving as a PDF.
Display options
Use the checkboxes in the options bar to control what information appears in each cell:
- Call name — shows the animal's call name (if different from registered name)
- Species — shows the species
- Birth date — shows month and year of birth
- Color coding — highlights sire lines in blue and dam lines in pink; uncheck for black-and-white printing
Program & logo
Select a program from the Program dropdown to show that program's logo in the certificate header. The program name also appears in the subtitle.
The program selector must be set before custom fields become available.
Custom fields on the certificate
If a program is selected and that program has custom field definitions (e.g. Coat Color, Registration ID), a Fields multiselect dropdown appears in the options bar. Select which fields to include:
- Only fields defined in the program's custom field template are available
- A field row only appears for an animal that actually has a value set — animals without that field are not affected
- Custom fields are added per cell alongside the animal's other information
Important: Custom fields must be set on each ancestor individually (via the animal's Details tab). If an ancestor doesn't have a value for a selected field, that row is silently omitted for that animal only.
Saving and printing
Click Save / Print to open a print-ready version in a new window. The certificate is formatted for A4 landscape. Use your browser's Save as PDF option to download it, or print directly.
Tips
- Build your pedigree from the bottom up: add grandparents first, then parents, then the animal itself.
- Use external animals for ancestors that aren't in your care — they won't clutter your main list.
- Set custom fields (e.g. Registration ID, Coat Color) on ancestors before printing the certificate so they populate correctly.
- The subject animal's information is shown in the certificate header — the chart itself starts from the parents.
